Auckland investors buying here

Auckland buyers and low interest rates are combining to heat up Nelson’s usually cool winter housing market leaving real estate agents searching to find enough listings to meet demand. The latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures show that sales volumes in Nelson in June were 21 per cent higher than last year and already Mike Pero Real Estate’s Craig Hamilton says he expects “July’s numbers to be huge” as well. And that’s left real estate agents battling to find enough listings as buyers continue to invest in the Nelson market. “As soon as the interest rates dropped, the buyers started coming to the open homes. We are also getting a lot of interest from outof-town buyers - I’ve sold a couple of properties to Auckland buyers in the last

few weeks,” Craig says. Demand for houses listed from $250,000 to $400,000 is particularly high with Craig saying “you know that they will get multiple offers”. Ray White Richmond’s principal Brent Sturm says they are also getting a lot of demand with some Australian and Chinese investors “buying properties sight-unseen”. “That’s the first time we are seeing a lot of that. Buyers from Auckland, Australia and China are looking at the houses on-line and buying them.” Brent says Ray White has

Richmond Mall brings in parking wardens Andrew Board Richmond Mall will introduce parking wardens next month in an effort to stop people leaving their cars there all day. Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says a recent investigation found up to 40 per cent of the vehicles in the mall car park each day were there for the entire work day. She says those “abusing” the free parks were either retail workers in the mall, retail workers on Richmond’s Queen St or people parking

their cars at the mall and catching the bus or carpooling to work in Nelson city. She says the high number of people parking there all day has forced the mall to introduce parking wardens, which will fine people $65 for going over the two hour time limit. The company employed is national car parking firm Wilsons Parking. Belinda says there will be flexibility for shoppers who need to use a park for longer, with an online system able to give them extra time. “We understand that there are times

when more than two hours is needed, for example when a customer is booked in for a colour or tint at the hairdressers. In this case we will have a process in place for these customers to ensure they are excused from being ticketed.” The enforcement programme will be introduced in two stages, the first on August 4 will simply mean a warning ticket for people parking over the two hour limit. From August 11 the full enforcement will begin. She says
